Goal 5 - Gender Equality

 

Summerland recognises the inequality in genders – both inside as well as outside work environments and seeks to level out this imbalance.

A range of initiatives have been implemented to address this gender imbalance, including:

  • Actively seeking the ‘best person for the job’ irrespective of how applicants identify in all employment positions
  • Work towards a gender balance on the Board and in senior management positions. Currently, Summerland has 3 female Board members and Executive Managers evenly balanced with three males and three females
  • White Ribbon Workplace Accreditation with regular training for all staff re the issue of domestic violence
  • Policies in place to assist vulnerable people by recognising and helping those who are at risk of physical, mental and financial abuse
  • Actively seeking sponsorship and community opportunities that consider gender equality
    Support of events which highlight and promote women in business
  • Providing flexibility in employment
  • Provision of specific assistance for customers who are impacted by family and domestic violence.

Goal 8 – Decent Work & Economic Growth

To address this goal, Summerland’s internal and external initiatives include:

  • Providing opportunities for staff to transfer within the business to gain skills and develop their careers
  • Utilise technology to improve performance and develop roles
  • Assist staff where possible to be flexible in where and how they work, with technology, training, policies and support
  • Programs to assist staff with mental health, particularly during times of stress due to external events that impact the community
  • Implementation of the Staff Engagement Survey to identify opportunities for improvement in the culture of the business
  • Clear operational goals and budgets to ensure the business is a success.

Goal 11 – Sustainable Cities & Communities

 

As a key employer in the region, Summerland Credit Union has a positive impact on the communities in which we operate. This includes the employment of over 100 staff; the use of a variety of local contractors and suppliers; and the investment we make in the community by providing a variety of financial services and sponsorship to many organisations. We make a significant economic contribution to the region in which we operate through the employment of over 100 staff, local suppliers and contractors; the growth of our deposit, loan and third-party products to meet budgetary requirements; and the support of community through sponsorships.

To address this goal, Summerland’s initiatives include:

  • Providing employment to regional communities
  • A founding partner of the Northern Rivers NSW brand
  • Sponsorship and social support programs
  • Many activities improving our environmental impact and reduction of our carbon footprint
  • Support skill development through scholarship programs
  • Providing an uplifting and empowering experience by supporting the Northern Rivers Green innovation awards
  • Delivering of financial literacy and cyber security programs
  • Supporting essential health workers through acknowledgement and recognition programs.

Goal 13 – Climate Action

 

This goal is integral to our environmental sustainability program. The measurement of greenhouse gases (GHG) on four areas: energy, air travel, paper and motor vehicle fuel has been completed since 2011. Many of the projects we have implemented recently have been towards the reduction of greenhouse gases. This goal is reported quarterly to the Board and included in our annual report. The information is also included in our annual report.

Initiatives include:

  • Actions to reduce resource use as the business grows
  • Accreditation by external authorities of measures that reduce our environmental impact
  • Active participation in promotions which support the protection of the environment such as tree planting and donations to environmental groups
  • A focus on reducing waste, increasing recycling, and other actions to reduce our carbon footprint
  • Reduction in the use of paper in our business, using carbon neutral paper where possible
  • Implementation of the Net Zero program to reduce our carbon footprint.
