Our friends at Bangalow Koalas have celebrated an incredible achievement in late 2024 by planting their 400,000th tree since 2019.
This milestone represents the restoration of approximately 360 hectares of koala habitat across six shires in the Northern Rivers region of NSW. This incredible milestone highlights the difference that can be made when we all work together as a community to protect and restore vital koala habitats.
The 400,000th tree was planted on a property in Knockrow, Northern NSW, marking the culmination of 148 planting projects on 114 properties since 2019. This hands-on, community-driven response to the climate crisis has connected individuals, families, farmers, communities, and Indigenous and Landcare groups in a collaborative effort.
Linda Sparrow, President of Bangalow Koalas, beautifully captures the heart of this mission “To prove, especially to our children, that making a difference is not just possible, it’s happening now.”
While this milestone is worth celebrating, there is still more work to be done. Habitat loss remains the greatest threat to koalas, and Bangalow Koalas is determined to plant 500,000 trees by the end of 2025. an additional 90,000 trees must be planted in 2025 to realise this vision.
Bangalow Koalas relies on the generosity of businesses, charitable foundations, government and non-government organisations, and individual donors to continue their essential work. As Linda Sparrow explains “there are so many amazing organisations that have helped us plant trees by supporting us with funding, but our job isn’t anywhere near finished yet.”
If you’d like to contribute to this important cause and help secure a sustainable future for koalas, consider donating to Bangalow Koalas. Every donation brings them closer to their goal and ensures that future generations can enjoy the presence of these iconic animals in a thriving habitat.
At Summerland Bank, we are committed to sustainability and community-driven initiatives. Our three-year sponsorship of Bangalow Koalas reflects our belief in creating a better future for our environment and the wildlife that depends on it.
